Richard Brettell To Discuss the Life of Paul Gauguin

PORTLAND, Ore.
— Richard Brettell, the American director of the French Regional and American Museum Exchange (FRAME), will discuss the career and life of artist Paul Gauguin at the Portland Art Museum on Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m.

About Richard Brettell
Richard R. Brettell is the American director of the French Regional and American Museum Exchange (FRAME), which promotes the exchange of art and information between museums in France and the United States. Among the foremost authorities on Impressionism and French Painting, Brettell has written over 25 books, including publications on artists such as Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, and Paul Gauguin, and studies of Impressionist landscape painting. He has curated exhibitions such as Monet in Normandy for the de Young Museum in San Francisco and The Impressionist in the City: Pissarro’s Series for the Dallas Museum of Art.

Brettell was a guest curator of the Portland Art Museum’s 2003 exhibition Paris to Portland: Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Masters in Portland and curated The Triumph of French Painting, a travel exhibition which was on view at the Museum in 2004. Brettell lectured in the Museum’s Critical Voices series in 2006.

As Professor of Art and Aesthetics at the University of Texas in Dallas, Brettell established the Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Museums in 1998. Brettell has taught at Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, Yale University, and Harvard University and earned bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees from Yale University.


About the European and American Art Council
Members of the Portland Art Museum European and American Art Council enjoy behind-the-scenes access to collections, exhibitions, and curators. Founded in 1993, the council sponsors lectures and programs by noted scholars to Portland for public and private events. Through its travel program, council members visit museums, galleries, and private collections in Europe and the United States with Museum curators. The council raises funds to acquire and conserve important works of art for the Museum. Dues to join the European and American Art Council are $100 for Members, $200 for Contributor Members, and $500 for the Advocate Member level.
