Re-thinking Bike Sharing: The Open Bike Initiative

Sat, 7 Sep, 2013 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Kevin Bross and Brad Biddle
Intel OBI project managers

Adoption of bike sharing programs may be limited due to expensive and geographically-limiting kiosks, highly customized bicycles, and balancing and maintenance services from a single vendor. Join us the last weekend of Cyclepedia to learn about a new model. The Open Bike Initiative (OBI) uses low-cost, GPS-enabled devices with integrated locks that can attach to any off-the-shelf bicycle and be used with associated software and wireless services to manage a bike share system, using regular bike racks. The OBI model could enable better, cheaper bike sharing systems on university and corporate campuses and community housing projects. OBI is currently a pilot program at Intel’s Oregon campuses. Driven by Intel volunteers in partnership with the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, the Community Cycling Center, Nike, Portland State University, and the Westside Transportation Alliance, OBI is an example of a new wave of game-changing bicycle innovations in the Portland region.

Co-sponsored with Intel. Free for members; $15 non-members; $12 seniors and students. Lecture ticket includes Museum admission. Space may be limited, so advance tickets are recommended and available online.
