Bacon's Bodies: Trapping the Convulsive Figure

Thu, 20 Feb, 2014 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Most viewers find Francis Bacon's representations of human flesh disquieting. In this public lecture, art historian Patricia Failing will take a closer look at a range of Bacon's figure paintings, including his 1969 triptych Three Studies of Lucian Freud (on view at the Museum until March 30), and consider the work of several writers who have tried to analyze viewer responses to Bacon's imagery.

Patricia Failing is an independent scholar, writer, and critic who served as Professor of Art History at the University of Washington for nearly three decades. As a specialist in modern and contemporary art, Failing is author of several books as well as contributing editor at Art News.

Free for members; $5 non-members. Advance tickets available online.
