NIGEL NICHOLSON, PH.D.
WALTER MINTZ PROFESSOR OF CLASSICS, REED COLLEGE
With the London Olympics still fresh in our minds, join us for a two-part short course that will take a close look at depictions of athletes and will consider what they meant in the context of ancient Greece. With what virtues did they endow the athletes? What features were significant? How did these features develop over time? How and where were the pieces viewed? What politics did they promote? Part seminar and part Museum visit, this course aims to focus your eyes on certain key pieces in the Body Beautiful exhibition. In 2004, Nicholson was honored as Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
Fee: $20 members, $40 non-members; space is limited and advance reservations required.
