The Art of Building Italian Baroque Musical Instruments
With Susan Jensen, Byron John Will, Julia Gardner, Phil & Gayle Neuman

Sat, 12 Apr, 2014 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Take a closer look at the art of making Italian Renaissance and Baroque instruments with several of Portland’s celebrated instrument builders. Byron John Will, harpsichord maker, talks about the tradition and history of building Italian harpsichords and what makes these instruments so versatile in their richness, strength, and sweetness of sound while Julia Gardner shares her knowledge on the styles and techniques used in the instruments’ beautiful colorful lid paintings. Phil and Gayle Neuman, Directors of De Organographia and The Oregon Renaissance Band, demonstrate several lesser-known Medieval, Renaissance and early Baroque instruments built after Italian models, including a citole (plucked string instrument), a krummhorn (a wind-capped double reed instrument), and a sordun (a reed instrument with two interconnected parallel bores).

Members free; non-members $20, seniors and students $17. Advance ticket purchase recommended.
