Imagining Venice’s Soundscape
Rituals of Music in Early Modern Venice

Sun, 30 Mar, 2014 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Wendy Heller, Ph.D.
Professor, Department of Music; Director, Program in Italian Studies; Princeton University

For both residents of and visitors to Venice, music was essential to the life of the city. Central to the Republic’s devotional practices, music was heard inside San Marco, in the city’s many churches, confraternities, and convents, and echoed across the canals and bridges during the hundreds of processions that marked the liturgical year. As a magnet for pilgrims, home to many Jews, and as the crossroads between east and west, Venice also had a rich soundscape of music that at times was distinctly foreign. This talk explores the rhythms and rituals of Venice’s musical life.

Members free; nonmembers $20, seniors and students $17. Advance ticket purchase recommended.
