Born and raised in the heart of Portland’s African American community, Carrie Mae Weems is one of the most significant artists working today. In this four-session series, Portlanders will explore themes of race, family, and history in Weems’ art, and in work by contemporary black women writers.
The series will be led by Lois Leveen, author of The Secrets of Mary Bowser, a novel based on the true story of a former slave who became a Union spy in the Confederate White House.
