KEVIN QUASHIE, PH.D., ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, AFRO-AMERICAN STUDIES, SMITH COLLEGE
Critics reference the power of the authentic images of African Americans in Weems’ work. Yet what is striking over her exemplary career is the use of storytelling, how much Weems is interrogating authenticity through visual narratives. Quashie is the author of Black Women, Identity, and Cultural Theory: (un) Becoming the Subject, and will discuss the artist’s storytelling through images of people for whom display is not an uncomplicated matter.
Free for members; lecture ticket includes Museum admission. Space may be limited. Advance tickets are recommended and available online or on site.
