Mysterious Spirits, Strange Beasts, Earthly Delights: Early Chinese Art from the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Collection

Written by exhibition curator and the Portland Art Museum's Emeritus Curator of Asian Art, Donald Jenkins, with contributions by Jan Quivey, and an essay by Jay Xu, the distinguished Pritzker Curator of Asian Art at The Art Institute of Chicago, Mysterious Spirits, Strange Beasts, Earthly Delights: Early Chinese Art from the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Collection is a definitive chronicle of one of the finest private collections of art from this period formed on the West Coast. This full color, 144-page catalogue is published by the Portland Art Museum and distributed by the University of Washington Press, Seattle and London.

The objects featured in the catalogue and exhibition cover the important Warring States and Qin-Han periods, a seven-century span (481 BCE - 220 CE). Remarkable for the wide-ranging nature of the artifacts, the exhibition reveals imaginative creatures of the supernatural world and realistic images of objects and artifacts of daily life.
